One of the main goals of the LIGNOZYMES project was to implement a sequence-based metagenomic approach to identify carbohydrate-degrading enzymes in thermophilic compost samples containing lignocellulosic residues collected from Portuguese composting units (Terra Fértil (TF), Gintegral (GN) and Lipor (LP)). The raw shotgun metagenomic sequencing data were used to develop a novel multi-step bioinformatic pipeline to find carbohydrate-degrading enzymes.
