It aims to fill a research gap by providing scholars with a comprehensive mapping of graphic novels published in Brazil and Portugal that engage with this issue of gender-based violence, namely, any harm carried out against someone because of their sex, gender, and/or gender identity. Notwithstanding the emerging trend of feminist graphic narratives and the growing body of related research, no systematic overview has yet been conducted on comics and graphic novels specifically addressing the theme of gender-based violence in the Lusohpone context.
<sumDscr><timePrd cycle="P1" event="start" date="2009">2009</timePrd><timePrd cycle="P1" event="end" date="2025">2025</timePrd><dataKind>Mapping of graphic novels published in Brazil and Portugal that engage with this issue of gender-based violence</dataKind><nation>Brazil</nation><nation>Portugal</nation></sumDscr><notes>This mapping was developed within the scope of the GENTEEL project – Graphic Novels Against Gender Violence funded by FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (ID: 2023.14621.PEX).</notes></stdyInfo><method><dataColl><targetSampleSize><sampleSize>41</sampleSize></targetSampleSize><sources><dataSrc>The mapping considers 41 graphic novels published between 2009 and 2025 in Portugal and Brazil, all of which focus on gender issues.</dataSrc></sources><collMode>The mapping was carried out by means of research conducted online and offline. The online part of the research availed of free search on browsers, examinations of comics forums and blogs, as well as of social media (mostly Instagram, given its predominant visual aspect) and other internet platforms used by comics creators to share their work (e.g. crowdfunding sites used by artists to showcase, discuss and financially support their projects). The authors also carried out research using publishers’ websites, a useful resource when catalogues are available. The offline aspect was conducted in libraries, bookshops and comics festivals/events. The contribution of fellow comics scholars, enthusiasts, and artists— with whom the authors engaged in dialogue—was essential, leading to a series of suggestions that significantly influenced the composition of the map.</collMode><resInstru>Mapping</resInstru></dataColl><anlyInfo/></method><dataAccs><notes type="DVN:TOU" level="dv"><a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"><img alt="Creative Commons Licence" style="border-width:0" src="https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by/4.0/88x31.png" /></a><br />This work is licensed under a <a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a>.</notes><notes type="DVN:TOA" level="dv">This document has restrict access until July 2026</notes><setAvail/><useStmt><restrctn>This document must be restricted until at least July 2026.</restrctn><contact>nicoletta.mandolini@ics.uminho.pt</contact><citReq>The mapping is a research outcome of the exploratory project GENTEEL - Graphic Novels Against Gender Violence, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia CT (2023.14621.PEX), please cite as:
